The Heritage Materials Imaging Facility (HMIF) was established in 2003 to fill the gap in New Zealand's ability to scan large format heritage material to a high resolution and a precise colour match. It is a "world-class" digitisation facility, originally a joint initiative between NZMS and Victoria University of Wellington located in a "heritage fortress", opened by the then Minister for the National Library, Hon. Marion Hobbs. Its centrepiece is our 1.1 ton Cruse Scanner. HMIF was first located at the National Library of New Zealand and moved to Archives New Zealand in 2009 when the National Library decamped for a three year building upgrade.
The facility is located on a secure floor so please call ahead or ask the Archives NZ Reception staff on the ground floor to contact us.
The main entrance to the building is on Mulgrave Street . The dockway and carpark is on Thorndon Quay.
We have one carpark (no 25) which can be reserved. It is located on the south side of the building, accessed from Thorndon Quay. Alternatively there is there is metered parking on Mulgrave Street, Aitken Street and on Thondon Quay.
