Microform Scanning
We convert microfilm, microfiche and aperture cards to digital files through our Microform Centre of Excellence.
Any bureau can scan microfilms, but the human skill factor is our point of distinction! MCoE is a joint initiative with our sister company. It combines Desktop Imaging's skill in commercial digitisation and indexing with NZMS's expertise in preservation microfilming.
Scanning is a highly effective way to repurpose existing collections of microforms. For example the service is used extensively by Local Authorities to convert their film, fiche and aperture cards of property records and plans into on-line content.
If your microfiche is acetate based and at risk to vinegar syndrome, scanning is another collection management option to consider along with duplication.
Microform scanning can also be combined with current microfilming of originals. This strategy delivers the dual benefits of microfilm as a long-term preservation medium and digital images for rapid retrieval and access. There is the added bonus that it is often cheaper to film the originals and scan the microfilm than to scan the originals directly, particularly for A3+ or bound materials.
