BAU
Modified By Pauline on 9/14/2010 5:57:32 PM)

Digitisation as business as usual - something to aspire to.  Where do you see digitisation fitting into your organisation's business as usual?  Are you finding some parts of the 'digital content life cycle' (selection, description, collection management) compatible with exisiting processes in other parts of your organisation?

Once a collection has been digitised is it feasible to make digitisation part of the acquisitions/accessioning process for all new items being added to the collection?

Re: BAU

We are in the midst of our digitisation project (actually coming to a [hopefully temporary] end due to lack of funding) and it's already starting to become business as usual in my own practises.  When we get new photographs accepted into the collection, I accession them all as per usual but now add them to the scanning list before putting them into storage, and will continue this as new items continue to appear.  To me it makes sense to make it business as usual though - if the existing collection is digitised we might as well make new items follow the same pattern.  This only applies to the photographs at the moment as they are among the more frequently used items in our collections; the other archives we hold will be digitised as required for now.

Plus, it's already business as usual for the objects we receive to be photographed before going to storage, so I'm working on getting the same processes in place for the archives!

Re: BAU

@SandiB - Thanks for the comment.  In my experience the shift from a digitisation project to business-as-usual can also be an opportunity to get others in the organisation involved. This is not without its challenges.  People have busy jobs and you need to be realistic about how much time BAU digitisation is going to take and how it fits in with other BAU tasks.  Also if colleagues have not been engaged in the project you need to spend some time getting them as enthusiastic about it as you are.  If done well this can be really positive.
