New Zealand Micrographic Services (NZMS) is a leading provider of digitisation, preservation, and access solutions for New Zealand’s cultural heritage sector.
NZMS are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team as a full time Digitisation Technician in our office based in Ōtautahi Christchurch and onsite at our clients’ sites, as required.
The main purpose of this role is creating digital images of archival material, such as books, photographic prints, slides and manuscripts, using a variety of scanning and photographic equipment, and undertaking post capture processing, as per job specifications.
The successful applicant will be someone who loves the challenge of working with unique and diverse objects, has experience in photography, post-capture processing, and is comfortable working with various hardware and software to get the best outcomes.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Establishing and clarifying the technical and business requirements of each job
- Capture and post capture processing, as per job specifications
- Experienced in automating deployment and infrastructure activities through effective scripting
- Communication, in conjunction with management, to clients on the progress of their project
- Equipment maintenance/troubleshooting
Desirable Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Experience in photography, scanning & digital image post processing
- Experience in production workflows in a digital production environment
- Able to “read or interpret an image”, recognise digital defects or unwanted artefacts in an image, and make efficient decisions regarding colour and tonal corrections
- Proficient with the Adobe Creative suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office.
- A quick adapter to various technology and software
- Experience using PowerShell or other applications such as Python or JavaScript.
- Demonstrates problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and pose innovative or creative solutions
- Collection preparation – knowledge of handling a variety of fragile, rare and unique heritage materials from books, through manuscripts and photographic materials to large format documents, objects and artwork.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal staff and external clients
- A self-starter, able who can work with minimal supervision
- Flexibility to travel within the Southern region, when required
- Holds a current full driver’s licence
